Is this good or bad?

NEW YORK, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Christian t-shirts are a more popular choice among young adults than either NBA-themed or Abercrombie & Fitch logo tees, according to a new nationwide survey by Internet retailer DATOmana.

419 adults aged 18 - 34 from across the country were surveyed about their tastes in tees. When presented with a variety of t-shirts, including an Abercrombie & Fitch logo tee, a NBA-licensed tee and a Christian tee, 40 percent chose the religious tee, versus 16 percent for the NBA tee and 30 percent for the Abercrombie tee.

Got gas...

Today I got gas as a local gas station. Next to me was a nice new red pick-up truck with the confederate flag on the back window. Next to him was a Pepsi truck, with an African-American man unloading soda into the station.

It bothered me.

I didn't take the opportunity to talk to either man. But I wondered what their thoughts were as they sat next to each other in the parking lot.

I may be wrong...and correct me if I am...but the confederate flag is a symbol of the Old South which embraced slavery. Why promote slavery. Why wave a flag of racism?

Unfortunately racism is still a part of our culture....on both sides of the hue. We've come a long way in the last 50 years, but we still have a ways to go. And promoting the confederate flag won't help the cause.

By the way, i have to wonder why people who love the confederate flag are not flying the American flag. Is their love of the Old South greater than their patriotism for our nation.

Anyway, symbols....more powerful than you think.

Whew, where did last week go?

Time has been flying away this past week. Let's review a few highlights and thoughts:

IYCM's Momentum Convention was this past weekend. Everything was good. Our students seemed to really love it. God worked in some great ways. I saw some of our unchurched students experience God in a whole new way. You could tell God was speaking to them throughout the weekend. Our leader-type students were challengeed to keep going strong in their faith. All was good. Funniest moment: In the hotel where we were staying their was some kid (not from our group!) in the hot tub in the moring when we were eating breakfast. You could watch him though a big window. He had soap bubbles all over his body.....he was wearing jeans....and he was pretending to be taking a bath. Then, he would turn around and look at the window....and act totally suprised by the onlookers....cover up his body with his arms and fad this incredible startled look on his face....very funny. One more funny moment: A guy named Justin from our group bought a belt buckle that looked like the bright digital info sign at Dairy Queen....he could progam messages on it, and it would scroll in bright red lights on his belt buckle.

The Pipeline room is remodelled. We kicked it into high gear last week and finished up the room. We have a cool multi-level stage, lighting and nice room set-up for the Pipeline. It's very versitile....so themes will be fun this Fall/Winter. Thanks to EVERYONE who pitched in and helped out on it. You guys ROCK.....Jenny, Aaron, Ashley, Joe, Joy, Pastor.

We had a Hip-Hop show at the Pipeline. It's another first at our church. We brought in a rapper for the Pipeline. The only time we came close to that is when Blake Leitch rapped in the subway of East Boston (all alumni please laugh). Prodigal did a great job with our students, and it was a blast. Kudos to Skylar, Bernard and Kacie for stepping out and dancing for the fun of it. I think I learned a new move!

I finished my Bono book last night. A few quick thoughts: 1) He is definately a Christian and making a big difference in people's lives. 2) We have to quit catagorizing people by labels...i.e. "Bono isn't a Christian, he plays secular music." And we need to realize we all have some faults. Bono says a few vocabulary words I would never say, but he cares for people in ways I will never care for them. We all have our faults. 3) We need to see people the same way God does. God cares deeply about thousands of Africans dying everyday, do we? 4) If Bono can bring God up any many of his conversations, why can't we? 5) Most Christians probably won't read this book because it's not sold in Christian bookstores. But if they gave it a chance, (and could get past a few bad words) they would be deeply challenged to follow God and Love People.

Hands and Feet (Part 2)

On Oct. 17 I posted about our church's smallgroup doing yard work at the home/shop of a local biker gang guy who was now in a nursing home because of a bad accident. If you missed the post, scroll down and read it before reading the rest of this.

Ok, to catch you up to speed, the man passed away last week. He got pretty sick all of a sudden and then passed away. The family was devastated.

Since I met the son and daughter while cleaning up their parents' place, (and the grand daughter occasionally attends the Pipeline) I decided to go the to visitation and make a contact with the family.

As I pulled into the parking lot of the funeral home, there were about 100 Harley Davison bikes in the lot, on the road, and lined up in the drive. Nearly all the bikers--dresses in their leather, bandanas, vests, and denim--stood in the funeral home parking lot as if it was a tailgate party to an Oakland Raider's game. (I think the funeral home set out extra trash bags for the beer bottles.)

It was quite the site. I wondered through the crowd to get into the funeral home to meet the family. They remembered me as the youth pastor who helped clean up dad's place. They introduced me to friends as the guy from the church who helped them out. Everything was very positive...and thankful and appreciative.

We talked for a brief moment, I told them I was sorry for their loss, and them made my way to the door after looking at some pictures.

As I left (in the only mini-van in the lot) I had a few thoughts:

There was a great sense of community that surpasses the typical American church. The clusters of friends talking outside, laughing, crying, drinking...it was community. Tight community.
This biker leader who passed away was highly loved and respected by his friends. He had invested years of memories with many of these people. The pictures showed how much he was around people, and loved to have fun. He was a social magnet. An influencer.
There was pride in wearing the biker wear that day. It was if everyone put on their biker best for this event. People like to identify with other people.
The majority of people who attended this funeral wouldn't just walk into any ordinary church. The church would have to be creative, flexible, and more open minded to reach out to them and show them love, acceptance, and belonging. Relevance is extremely important.
Most people there had to deal with some type of emotions regarding death. No matter how they live, what they do, what they ride, what they wear, how they talk, and how tough they are...they still have to face the reality of death. We all do. Death is not optional. We all face it. It leaves many with questions, some fears, some anger, some sorrow, some celebration. But for everyone, it's a reality we face. Everyone faces eternity.

All the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in Mattoon gathered this morning for a Red Ribbon week assembly. (A Drugs/Alcohol, and Tobacco deal.) Their speaker: yours truly. It actually went really well. A lot of excitement in the air. Lots of crowd participation, and they got serious and listened during the moments they needed to.

I guess all that mixed together means the school assembly went well. In Christian evangelical circles, we don't know how to judge effectiveness unless a bunch of hands go up in the air at the end of a sermon.

Today, no hands...just a bunch of listening ears.

It seems weird to stand in front of close to a thousand students and not share "the Gospel." But the message was about healthy choices, consequences of bad decisions, helping others who are in need, and knowing you were made with a purpose...and not to mess your life up in the process. I guess that is a great starter for pointing people in the right direction.

I think we (typical Christians) feel like we haven't done our "Great Commission" duty unless we've shared the "Roman's Road to Salvation"verses with everyone. But in today's culture, I believe the Road to Romans begins with trust, love, respect, care and friendship. After you travel down those streets, then you can turn right onto Romans.

Anyway, a lot of students heard about making good choices and were encouraged not to get involved in bad ones. And now they know my face and can come talk to me when they get a chance.

Did I preach today at the Middle School, nope. Did I communicate God's message? I think so. It just gets packaged in a little different vehicle. And sometimes that vehicle takes a little while to grab the heart and soul of the listener.

So, today...no hands, just ears. Tomorrow....we'll see what happens. I simply ask God to stir curiosity of Him in their hearts.

...and then we better be ready to talk when the questions start coming.

Random thoughts from a meeting...

I'm sitting in a IYCM youth pastor leadership meeting. We just watched a Donald Miller DVD on some thoughts on Christianity. A lot of stuff to plow through, but here are some thoughts...

- No one will listen to you until they know how much you care about them.

- Ask a non-Christian..."Is there any way the church has hurt you in the past?" Apologize to them and begin a journey of healing through friendship and discussion.

- Why have we politicized abortion, but not poverty? What will help reach more people? What helps show the love of Jesus?

- It’s time to repent for NOT CARING about people who are not like you.

- How do you look at people? Do you have compassion for ALL people?

- Do I think life is a “a movie” about me?

- Does the no-name people you pass by everyday have any value to you?

- Miller suggests Evangelical Christians are the most fear people in the country behind serial killers.

Religious coffee drinkers...pour yourself a cup of the good stuff and read this.

Rick Warren (Purpose Driven Life guy) has done it again. This time his writings won't be sold in mega-bookstores, they'll be sold at Starbucks...on the cups.
(I guess you can find those in bookstores, too.)

Rick Warren, author of the mega-selling The Purpose-Driven Life, on its cups. It will be the first mention of God in the company's provocative quote campaign, The Way I See It. In 2005, Starbucks is printing 63 quotes from writers, scientists, musicians, athletes, politicians and cultural critics on cups for company-run and licensed locations to carry on the coffeehouse tradition of conversation and debate.

The Warren quote about God having a purpose in your life will be one of 63 other quotes that will vary from pro-homosexuality, extremist political views, and other "thought provoking" stuff. So I wouldn't say Starbucks is on a mission to evangelize the world. Their mission through this campaign is to get conversations started.
Hopefully good conversations will be birthed after reading a Starbucks cup. If God can use donkeys, he can use coffee cups.

Head Biker gets Lawn Cleaned Up

My church small group met this Saturday. We didn't study a book, nor did we sing songs. We didn't even pray. --We cleaned up people's yards...and one place is worthy of telling a story.

About 11 of us gathered at a closed down Harley Davison Bike shop. Weeds had grown up around the building, bushes were thick, and the back "patio area" was an overgrown mess. It had been left alone for sometime.

Who lived there? Well, the head guy of a local biker gang did. His apartment was above the bike shop. But the situation for his family had gone downhill. His wife died about a year ago. He got in a horrible motorcycle accident months ago, and their place has sat empty since all this has happened. A family in our church knew of the situation, and we made arrangements to go over and clean up their place.

The daughter of the dad (who is now in a nursing home) came to unlock the back gate. She was in tears as she remembered all the parties and friends who visited this place every night. Although she was extremely sad of her dad's condition and loss of her mother, she couldn't believe a church would come help clean up the place.

That's why we do it. We want people to know God's love reaches out past the walls of the church. It was a complete privilege to clean up the yard of a local biker gang member. It was rewarding to just be a window of light and love to a hurting family.

Now that the weeds are gone, the beer cans are picked up, and the grass is cut, it's time for God's love to sink in. My prayer is that the family will continue to wonder why a church helped them out. And then I hope their search continues...

A Needed Word

Sometimes we just need some encouragement from God. Today was that day for me. It's nice...and very comforting...to know that God is faithful. His love and faithfulness is a refuge during stormy weather.

Politicians Rocked U2 in $$$raiser

NEWS--Rock giants U2 have expressed outrage that US politicians from both main parties, including Hillary Clinton, are using their concerts to fill campaign coffers.

However, U2...especially Bono...loves to get involved with politics and social policy. But he doesn't like when politics get involved in U2 shows. Interesting.

Personally, it sounds like white-collar, corporate ticket scalping to me. But hey, I bought an over-priced ticket on eBay and landed 10 feet away from Bono in Chicago.

Anyway.....it's interesting to watch pop culture and politics collide.

BTW: still reading the new Bono book. Love it. As a Christian, it is very challenging. There's a few things...and words....I'd rather not see in his vocabulary...but I would love to have his love and passion for people and justice. I love to see how he brings God into many conversations he has with this journalist. You may want to check it out, even if you care very little about their music.

What's inside?

Some things in life look a little odd on the outside. And beyond odd, they look ugly, disturbing, scary, or unattractive.

This is the case with the lichi or lychee. It's a wild fruit found in Honduras. It reminds me of an ugly red piney ball. Or some sort of space alien I've killed in video games. Nevertheless, it's not the first thing I would put in my mouth.

But a Honduras national pulled our car over and bought a bag of these from a child on the side of the road. He gave it to me and said, "Eat it." I just looked at him...

Then he took his thumbnail and split the fruit open. He pulled out a sweet, white-colored fruit that reminded me of a grape with a large seed.

I ate it...and i liked it. And I had a few more.

Some people are like Lichis. They may seem rough, unkind, dirty, mean, unpopular, different, and ugly on the outside. But on the inside...if you give them a chance...you will find a sweet person who is simply wanting friendship, acceptance, and some form of love.

I'm thankful a man from Honduras taught me to look inside before making my final judgment on Lichis. Today I'm learning to look inside people before I make that final judgment.

There is something sweet and redeeming in everyone...sometimes you just have to get through the outer surface and peel back the ugly spiney things.

Where is daddy?

I assume my son Dakota has asked for me a few times while I have been gone in Honduras. I deeply miss my wife, Dakota and Riley. Being away is difficult...and fun at the same time. But it is never meant to be for too long...or everything would fall apart. And in some cases it is happening as I type. The absence of daddy is slowly draining life out of many familes.

Honduras youth are not deeply troubled with drugs and alcohol. Their biggest challenge is their involvement in gangs. Unlike in the States, they are not in gangs for money or drugs. In this case, they simply need acceptance.

About 700,000 people live in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. And most of the kids...MOST OF THE KIDS...have lost their fathers to work in another country. Yes they are making money and sending it back to the families, but their presence is deeply missed at home. It is a mixed tragedy. A deceptive tool of the enemy. It is family cancer disguised in meeting economic needs. It is harming families, while at the same time helping them through financial troubles.

Youth and children in this city are reaching out to gangs because their fathers are gone making money in another country. Youth and children are living with grandparents or older siblings because work ethic and family financial survival has taken precident. Kids are coping in single-parent...or no-parent homes because of the lack of an economic base in Honduras. More money comes into the financial flow of Honduras from men working out of country and sending money home, than the entire country of Panama gets through its Panama Canal income. Its the LARGEST resource of money in Honduras...yet at the same time, it's a silent serial killer to families.

Honduras is no exception to the missing-dad syndrome. In the States, dads may still be in the country, but they are still gone from the home so often they are not truly raising their own kids. Dads are working long hours--making ends meet--but then get home late and still don't spend quality time with their kids.

I have opened my eyes today to the need to spend quality family time with my boys. They need me. And God has placed me here on Earth to take care of them in more ways than just financial.

Let Family Time become an important part of the day in every home. Maybe as a church we should campaign for this stronger than any other cause.

Think of it...FAMILY TIME CAMPAIGN...an awareness campaign that promotes one hour of quality family time each day. It could change the world. ...one family at a time.

But before I call the media, I better make plans with my family. I need this campaign just like your family, just like America's family...just like Honduras' family.

Daddy....where are you? Son...I'll be home soon.

Notes from San Pedro Sula

I´ve made it to San Pedro Sula, Honduras. It was not easy getting here.
I got up at 2 am on Wednesday, headed to St. Louis at 3 am for a flight. Arrived at the airport at 5 a.m. Boarded the plan at 6 a.m. Landed in Miami at 10 a.m. (Miami time) Sat in the airport until noon for next flight. Found a horrible Chinese fast food place in the mean time. Got on the plant at 12.30 and waited for departure. The captain came on 30 mins later and told us the plane was not working right and we would all have to get off the plane and wait for another plane for our flight. We waited an hour and then boarded our second plane. We got on and waited 30 mins...until the captain came on and told us there was another problem and we would have to get off this plane, as well. (American Airlines....if you are wondering) They gave us a food voucher and told us to check back in an hour and see what was happeneing. I got some good Cuban food with Kathryn and Natasha from Book of Hope (who was on my flight). Then at 6.30 p.m. our third plane in Miami loaded and we headed to Honduras. It was a long day of travel.

Thoughts...

All Latin American countries and big cities look alike.
There are wonderful people here.
I silently wept as I watched young children sleeping on cardboard mats in the downtown area late last night.
I had tacos late last night with some sort of chocalate sauce on them??? It was not dessert either...just a taco plate off the menu. It was ok. Nothing to write home about....although i am.
We visted the hotel we will be staying at in June for our Illinois BOH trip. I was excited to see the rooms have electric water heaters attached to the shower heads. ...It will be a great place for our team.
I am rooming with Dennis, the national BOH coordinator for this country, as well as Belize, Panama, Costa Rica...maybe others? He is a great man....soft spoken, but passionate about Book of Hope ministries. AND...pretty good at English...better than he would give himself credit.

Today (Thursday) we visit a few schools, vist more downtown areas for video footage and pictures, visit a place on the beach for a possible day off on the trip, and eat some good authentic Honduras food.

Honduras on Wednesday

I'll be traveling to Honduras on Wednesday to help set up a Book of Hope trip for the Summer. All Illinois teens are invited to check out this trip. All the final details will be announced at Momentum convention in November.

I'll only be in Honduras for 2 days. It's a quick trip, but I'm looking forward to seeing and experiencing the land we will be distributing God's Word and showing the animated God Man video in. It will be a great trip in June 2006.

I believe short-term mission trips for students is crucial in helping them realize how big and diverse God's Kingdom is. I know there has been a lot of controversy in ministry circles whether or not short-term trips are beneficial. Here's my opinion:

It all depends of the trip, the organization leading the trip, and philosophy of ministry behind the trip. There are damaging short-term trip out there for people to go on....Damaging to the field, as well as damaging to the individual on the trip.

Then again, like Book of Hope, there are incredible opportunities. Trips like the one we will be offering in June 2006 will help American students see a side of life they have never experienced, will allow them to work with the national church and indigenous church. God's Word will be individually distributed to thousands of students, the Gospel message will be presented in a relevant way, AND the local church will be planning, spearheading, organizing all the efforts and doing all follow-up. It's a win-win for American kids and the churches in Honduras. This is a model of an effective short-term trip.

Let's not be discouraged by all the nightmare stories we've heard from other missionaries and youth pastors about bad trips. Do your homework, chose trips based on personal recommendation from trusted sources, and equip and prepare your team for a life-changing experience.

I love missions...especially short-term missions where I get to see God do miracles in American students' lives, as well as work in people's lives who live in a different land than I do.

Listen to Nancy...

I've spent all day at the local middle school video taping 7th and 8th graders in health class performing anti-drug and alcohol skits. It's amazing to me how involved these guys got in their skits. Although at first they were nervous...and some didn't really care...but for the most part many of them enjoyed being in them.

If most of the kids enjoyed the skits, why will at least half of them (if stats will continue at the same rate) get involved in the very thing they encouraged others not to do? Interesting.

My gut feeling is that some teens enjoy skits more than they enjoy standing firm in their convictions. Again, interesting.

To think positive, I believe it does help to continue to beat the anti-drug/alcohol drum. I do believe, however, the drum beat needs to change, though, to keep up with culture; and not become static noise in the background of teenage life.

I'm thankful to be a part of this experience at the middle school. I'll be doing a complete anti-drug/alcohol assembly for the students at the end of October.

So in the meantime, if you get offered some drugs....yes Nancy....Just Say No!

Sunday Morning prep

It's early Sunday morning, and I'm at church getting ready for the service. Pastor Van is out of town at a class reunion. So I'll be preaching today. (And playing drums....so I'll be hot and sweaty...o great)

It's funny what you end up doing early in the morning at a church. Even though I came early to get my head in the game, other things/thoughts race through my mind.

I had to feed Lucky, my fish. He/she just stares at me until I feed it. It's weird, yet nice at the same time. I feel needed. (It's sad to get emotional gratitude form a fish.)
I checked my email.
I checked my blog.
I checked others' blogs.
I walked into the sanctuary...for a quick moment....just to see if everything was alright. I'm not sure what I was checking....I guess I wanted to make sure it was still there.
I printed off the Order of Service for the service today.
Now I'm posting random thoughts.
And now I'm going to go over my material for this morning.

Paper, rock, scissors...and 22 others

I like a good 'ol game of Paper, Rock, Scissors. But how about playing the game with 25 options, instead of three. No more ties....well there is a 4 percent chance of a tie with this game. It's a bit complex. Here's the basic layout of the options and flowchart.

Two errors at the Cardinal Game

Pigs Spotted at Bush Stadium

Joy and I got to go to a St. Louis Cardinals game Tuesday night. I'm not a big Cardinals fan, but this is the last series in their current stadium. After the season, they are going to blow the thing up. So I went more for the experience and enjoyment of the night instead of watching the cardinals lose to the Astros.

We weren't the only ones there not glued into every moment of the game. Our neighbors in row 6, seat 9 and 10 were a bit distracted too.

These guys helped strengthen the stereotype that guys are pigs. We sat next to two late thirties, early forties guys who were balding, a bit over weight and complete pigs. These guys were turned around 80 percent of the game looking at the crowd and the stairs hoping to catch a glance at any female. Married, single, young, and old...these guys were scoping out every female. Then after a few elbow nudges and grins, the guys would look at the field to see if they missed any baseball action. One got a phone call and even said, "It's hard to watch the game with all the pretty girls walking by."

The night was enjoyable overall. Although the Cardinals lost, and had one error...the big disappointment came from the the two errors in seats 9 and 10.

A few observations and thoughts:

1. Girls need to know what guys think when they dress to flaunt their stuff.

2. Most men are carnal pigs...there are exceptions.

3. We all need help realizing our flesh is weak. We need to be on our guard. We need to protect our spiritual lives by guarding are eyes, thoughts, and behaviors.

4. Foot-long brats at 9 p.m. create a warzone in your gut well into the night.

If we were the Body...

Are we, as Christians, helping hurting people, loving people, and sharing God's precious message of Hope? Good discussion can only evolve from a question like this.

Can we reach a Godless culture with only the spoken message? Or does the Gospel message include truth...and example? Faith...and good deeds? Where are we as a church?

U2 in Chicago... then Book of Hope in Florida

I've had some incredible opportunities in the past few days.
Matt Wilkie and myself headed to Chicago to watch U2. We bought General Admission tix to be on the floor. When we got there, Matt's ticket was chosen to be one of 200 randon tickets to get to go in the Bomb Shelter...the center staging area. We were TEN FEET from the stage!

Well, vacation was wonderful. I jet skiied, tubed, golfed, ate a lot, and....lost my glasses at the bottom of Table Rock Lake. Yep, I jumped in the lake from the boat, and my glasses went swimming all by themselves.

Things I learned on vacation:

My eye glasses don't float.
The best week to go on vacation in the week after Labor Day. (Cheaper and less people)
It is possible to lose more than 10 golf balls in 18 holes of golf.
Golf balls don't float.
A club sandwich costs seven dollars at a golf course.
The Baldnobbers are still in Branson.
The Starbucks in Branson hires people who know very little about coffee.
Spending time with family is good.
Dakota loves the pool.
You can eat too much meat.
The game Bump (with marbles and dice) is addicting.
The TV series Lost is addicting.
Boat trailer tires can go flat on the highway.
Did I mention you can eat too much meat?

I woke up this morning a little late. I slept in...and it felt good. Then I went downstairs to take a shower. And usually, before hitting the shower, I'll turn on some cable news (I only get CNN and MSNBC....yuck) to see what's the latest in our world. Today, like the last few days, it was more Katrina coverage.

I realized that 15,000 people were still in the Superdome. No power, no air conditioning, no toilets, no beds...just stuck there. And the best case scenario is that they will get bussed to the Astrodome in Houston in a few days. And that will be their home for who knows how long.

I felt fortunate. And then...my emotions and ponderings became blurry. I have a tough time knowing how to feel about the hurricane. I feel horrible. I feel blessed. I feel sorry. I feel like I'm not affected. I feel like I should be. I feel like it's just a news story. I feel like it's more than a news story. In the end...I feel fortunate.

I leave for a youth pastor's retreat Thursday-Saturday. I'm looking forward to it. (Except for the golf part.) I like hanging out with people who completely understand what I do everday. It's nice to share concerns, complaints, and ideas. But most of all, it's nice to just strengthen those relationships.

I leave for vacation as soon as I get back from the retreat. Nice scheduling, huh? I thought so. Anyway, as I head to a lake with in-laws and outlaws, I am looking forward to some rest, hanging with family I don't get to see very often, and playing with my sons in the pool. (I have to golf there too.)

That said...blogging will be on vacation too for a week and a half. Unless I feel inspired on vacation and find some internet access.

MTV and our youth culture

Last night I wrapped up our Sunday night Pipeline youth service, and immediately some students wanted to get home to watch the VMAs on MTV. (I never get into award shows on TV.)

So after the Pipeline Service, I hung out with some of the staff at good ol' McDs, then headed home kind of late....around 10 p.m. As I was flipping through the channels (mainly to find news on the hurricane) i came across the VMAs.

In the 30 seconds that I watched, I saw Jessica Simpson in a odd looking piece of lingerie giving an award. They kept showing the camera angle from behind her so you could see the back of her outfit. Or the lack thereof....

I turned it off....sighed deeply....prayed silently...and pondered about youth ministry in today's society.

Then today, Walt Mueller (Christian youth culture specialist), commented on the VMAs.

My airplane seat neighbor...

Coming home from Guatemala on a Delta flight from Atlanta to Indianapolis, I sat next to a guy who was curious about our trip. He wanted to know, "What kind of group are you?"

I told him we were a Book of Hope missions team coming home from Guatemala. He then began to ask me a line of questions about God, why I believe in him, how do I know He's real, and why we would go on a mission's trip. He seemed to be a complete atheist.

After about 20 mins of discussion (I wasn't trying to be a pushy religious guy)...I finally just laid out the plan of salvation to him in a simple way he could understand. As soon as I did this, he reached his large hand across the airplane aisle and said, "Travis, my name is Ken. I'm a Christian, and was just seeing if you would share the Gospel with me."

Then he gave me his card.

Ken Ruettgers was a tackle with the Greenbay Packers from 1985-1996. Today he works with Pro Athlete's Outreach and also helps minister to retiring athletes who need to be assimilated back into a non-professional sports society. It's interesting stuff. We talked about it for another 20 minutes.

The best thing about the entire plane ride was that the guy sitting next to Ken was some investor guy, and Ken connected him into our conversation and presented the plan of salvation to him. I gave him a leather leader edition of the Book of Hope I had in my bookbag. It was all cool....one of the divine appointment type of situations.

I've heard a lot of stories about, "you'll never guess who I sat next to on an airplane." But until my trip home from Guatemala...I never had one of those stories.

I have discovered that golf is not my sport. This September, for the first time in over 10 years, I am going to play golf. One time will be with youth pastor friends next week, the other will be with my brother-in-law and father-in-law on vacation.

I bought two bucket of balls at the driving range. Not one ball went more than 150 yards in the air. I used three different clubs....all the balls go the same distance and the same direction (far right).

I would be fine taking a putter and a 3 iron. And still, "FORE" would echo the fairways of the course.

Is there a secret I have never been told?

Having a partner in youth ministry is refreshing. Phil was our church's summer intern this year. He's a senior Youth Ministry major at North Central U. And thanks to Phil, this summer was a lot of fun, really effective for ministry, and loaded with memories.

Thanks Phil for adding some testosterone to the missions trip. Thanks for telling funny jokes and being a breath of fresh air around hear. Thanks for feeding my goldfish. Thanks for preaching. Thanks for technical help almost everyday. Thanks for all the energy at camp. Thanks for trying Country Bob's all purpose sauce on a blueberry donut. Thanks for going to Deb's Wings and Subs with me. Thanks for your willingness to eat at Gills. Thanks for cleaning my office and sorting through tons of piles of stuff. Thanks for helping me refocus on the purpose of ministry. Thanks for asking all the right questions. Thanks for being a learner. Thanks for opening my eyes to Mrs. Freshley oatmeal cream pies that are better than Little Debbie's. Thanks for sleeping in a hot tent when I was in the RV. Thanks for wearing sleeveless t-shirts with me this summer. And most of all....thanks for Bubba.

D-Camp 2005 was an incredible week. IYCM offers D-Camp every year, in which I'm the director of it. We had a great speaker, Justin Lathrop, from the Dallas areas. (Thanks bro!)

I'd like to thank Joe for all the great help....he's the older more mature looking guy in the front and center in the red shirt.

This year we went to East St. Louis for a one-day outreach. We worked with Jay Covert. He's a missionary every church needs to support.

We bought a mini-van!?!

Well, I turned 30 last January, Joy turns 30 next week, and we are the proud owners of 1 home, 2 kids, 1 dog, and a mini-van. At first I hesitated at purchasing a mini-van. What about that cool, hip image I'm suppose to have. Well, that wasn't happening anyway...and, I've realized my two boys aren't too worried about my looks.

So I'm here to say I'm proud to be a mini-van owner! It may not run through a dry riverbed, but it will run a DVD system on vacation. It may not carry a load of lumber, but it will carry seven comfortable people enjoying their ride. In fact, it's best for my family....and for that, I'm happy.

Summer Updates

Riley is doing great. Dakota is adjusting pretty good. The new chapter in life has begun, and things are going great.

I leave for Guatemala August 4-15. We will be working in the San Marcos area. We have team members from Joliet, Niles and Mattoon. It will be exciting. This is a Book of Hope Trip. For more info about Book of Hope....click HERE

OK....so it's been forever since I've updated this thing. To be quite honest, I haven't had the inspiration to write anything worth reading.

This blog started out as a serious search for truth. Then it turned into a political commentary during the elections. Then just some news commentary. Then nothing.

Today, I feel like just talking about some personal stuff...and throwing the whole "serious news writer" out the window for a while.

I'll talk about something very real in my life. I'm going to be a new dad in a matter of hours, days....hopefully not weeks. My wife is due this Sunday...and the sooner the better if you ask her.

This is a great summer, so far. I have an intern, Phil, working with me. He's awesome. We have great things planned for this summer.

I'll update you on personal life, Pipeline stuff, and maybe some fun news stuff as the days go by.

search for hope...in America?

So the Terri Schiavo situation is now a household name and people are spending their lunch hours, beak times, and dinner conversations discussing the definition of artificial life support and living wills.

In the few discussions I've had with people, I found that their is a good diversity of opinion on these issues. Is this political? Is this legislative v. judicial? Is this a private family issue or precedent for future physical assisted suicides? Lots of questions...lots of opinions.

So instead of getting in the middle of this battle...I just scanned the internet reading a few stories and gathering a few opinions.

In my search...I wondered where America was heading in it's definition of life. What is hope? Who determined the quality of life, the length of life, and the definition of life?

Is there hope? What a question for Americans....

Do a google search for hope clinic...here's what you will find. HOPE CLINIC
This is an abortion center!!! And they call it hope. It must not be hope for the baby who is going to get killed. Maybe hope for an irresponsible mom and dad who want to end a precious life to continue a life of selfish living.

Hope...Does America understand hope. Do we understand the wonder of life?
Do we forget that God has made each life, and he is the author and perfector of life?
Are we playing God and taking matters of life and death in our own hands?

Like I said.....lots of questions....and now lots of room for comments.

On the eve of Good Friday where our Lord and Savior was nailed to a cross...we must reconsider life, hope, and the mystery of God.

On this Easter season be open to the life God intended you to live. Live life, share hope, and love God.

Wal-Mart's Big Box building too Big
DUNKIRK, Md. (AP) - Wal-Mart is trying a new tactic to skirt local ordinances limiting the size of its stores. The company now plans to build two stores side-by-side at a site in Calvert County where plans for a single big store were thwarted by a size limit adopted last year.Wal-Mart officials are calling it one of the first arrangements of its kind in the country. The store and garden center in Dunkirkwill have separate entrances, utilities, and restrooms. And the combined size of the stores will be 30 percent larger than the 75-thousand square-foot limit for a single store.

I like this. Not because I'm a huge Wal-Mart fan (but I do like Wal-Mart). I like this story because it reminds us to persevere. So someone tells you your dream and idea can't happen. Find another way to make it work. Side-by-side Wal-Mart buildings is a great illustration of thinking outside the big box of life, and coming up with strategic, fresh ways to accomplish your goals.

Do you have a dream that someone is nay saying? Be creative. Be fresh. Find a way to get it done.

As Christians...let this be an example of how we must work through a multitude of barriers and obstacles to help people understand the true love and hope that Jesus offers. Find ways to make it relevant. Find ways to share His hope.

Think outside the big box....

Some personal random thoughts....

It's Monday and I'm trying to get back to regular life...if there is such a thing.

I've been to South Florida for a Book of Hope Celebration where fundraisers gave enough money to purchase almost 60 million copies of the the Book of Hope for youth and children around the world. What an experience to hear first-hand accounts of how God is working across this planet. I love partnering with God!

Then I got off a plane and headed to Target 05, a youth ministry leadership conference in Rockford, IL. I was deeply challenged to continue my pursuit to invest in students' lives. At 30, I feel I'm just getting started at helping teens understand what it means to have a real relationship with God. What a responsibility God has given me...to help people get connected to God. In today's world, we have to keep sharp on the presentation of an eternal message of hope and love. We want to be relevant to this culture, but maintain steadfast in preserving the message. Got ideas...let me know.

Today I was reminded that Joey Howell is leading a missions trip of college students to Rancho de sus Ninos in Mexico on his spring break. That's awesome. Joey has been with me on every trip I've put together. Now, he's leading a trip. Wow... Invest....invest....invest...

No matter who is reading this....I just feel prompted to let you know that God is real and at work in your life. I've seen, felt, and experienced Him at work in my life, many students' lives, my friends' lives and my family's lives. Just ask....He's waiting.

READ THIS: AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch children can dial phone lines to listen to recordings of fairytales like Little Red Riding Hood, but busy parents must be willing to pay about $7 a call, enough to buy the printed version of the classic tales.

"Sprookiebel" -- "dial-a-fairytale" in English -- says it is the first fairytale phone service in The Netherlands and has already had some 600 calls from children since its launch at the start of the month. Callers can choose from a selection of four fairytales, which are changed regularly, and listen to them 24 hours a day for 0.55 euro ($0.70) per minute.

It seems society has found another way to let parents skirt their responsibility and opportunity to invest in their children. Instead of sitting down and having story time, now parents in Europe can just hand their kids a phone.

It won't be long for this to carry over to the United States. And I'm sure their are willing parents who would pay $10 not to have to tell their kids a bedtime story. But I guess with the cartoon network and DVDs, we are already there....

Parenting is more than providing food, shelter, and the essentials. Remember the other core necessities like rubbing their head, telling them stories, playing with them on the floor, and investing in their relational makeup.

Children need real parents, not a phone that will tell them about Little Red Riding Hood.

Starting today, the Rev. Al Sharpton is joining forces with the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to urge a boycott of KFC.

"If we give our money to KFC, we're paying for a life of misery for some of God's most helpless creatures," says Mr. Sharpton in an eight-minute video that will be shown outside KFC's around the country.

Mr. Sharpton and PETA are demanding that KFC force its chicken suppliers to give chickens more room in factory barns before they are killed.

Here’s the problem with Sharpton’s partnership with PETA: He is pro-choice and supportive of a woman’s right to kill her unborn baby.

In fact, he calls it a civil right’s violation to be pro-life.

My religion says that abortion is wrong. I don’t understand how anyone can partner with PETA and join a campaign to improve the environment of chicken before being process for food consumption, yet turn their head and ignore abortion.

Sharpton believes these aborted babies are alive and a wonderful part of God’s creation, but allows people to kill them in the name of civil rights.

Mr. Sharpton needs to evaluate why he became a reverend. Instead of allowing his left-winged circle of influencers to tell him what to do, he needs to go back to his biblical origins.

His reference for standards has been tainted, and now babies are being killed while chickens may get more apartment space.

I think Sharpton is chicken to stand up to what he knows is right.

AP STORY: Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, who lost the November presidential election against Republican President George W. Bush, described the Iraqi elections as "significant" and "important" but said they should not be "overhyped."

"It is significant that there is a vote in Iraq," Kerry said in an interview with NBC television's Meet the Press. "But ... no one in the United States should try to overhype this election.

"This election is a sort of demarcation point, and what really counts now is the effort to have a legitimate political reconciliation," Kerry said. "And it's going to take a massive diplomatic effort and a much more significant outreach to the international community than this administration has been willing to engage in.

"Absent that, we will not be successful in Iraq," he said.

First, the democrat leaders say Iraq will never be liberated. Then, when American soldiers gave their lives to see Iraq as a free nation, the democrats said a democratic vote will never happen. Then when they voted this week, they say that it's not that big of a deal; and to wait and see if it is really that legitimate.

The democrats continue to move the goalline of success to make a Republican president look like he' s not doing a good job.

My hat's off to our soldiers and national leadership. We're moving in the right direction.

A prayer heard around the world...

Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell prayed the benediction prayer at President George W. Bush's inauguration today. It was incredible. I can't wait to find a transcript on the web. If you find it, leave a comment and post a link to the site.

During a time when some people are trying to keep religion or Christianity out of politics, his closing prayer--which was in the Name of Jesus Christ--was strong, bold, right on, and powerful.

I'm thankful Bush is in office. I'm thankful he will seek God's wisdom while he leads our nation.
I'm thankful he has surrounded himself with godly people who can add to his council.

Gamblers Wanted...

I listen to a lot of talk radio. And on many of the Chicago and St. Louis stations they run many ads for the big river-boat casinos in the area.

The ads are full of life. They sound fun. It sounds like a no-brainer way to go out for an evening and have a great night of fun and excitement.

...until you hear that last sentence of each ad. "Gambling problem? Call 1-800-Gambler.

Then the light should click on for everyone. This must be dangerous territory. And it is.

Advertising has its way of making dangerous things look good. Beer, casinos, fast-food...it's all dangerous to the life, but looks so good in the commercials.

Be careful out there. Things may not be as good as they appear.

I'll be honest-- I'm glad Kid Rock isn't playing at the inauguration. I know there is some debate as to adding entertainers to the venue that will show a youth culture that the Bush Administration is relevant. But it would have been a hypocritical move to book Kid Rock after standing on a platform for "family-friendly" policies and standards.

I'm sure someone on the inauguration committee is sweating a bit now that there has been a public backlash from the righter side of the Republican supporters. But the media would have had a hayday reporting all the past lyrics of Kid Rock as he stood on the stage at the inauguration.

Of all the entertainers out there...and none are perfect....Kid Rock was a poor choice for this event. Read the entire story I've linked to. He has some really bad stuff out there.

You may throw me in the pit with all the other family-friendly organizations that screamed about this Kid Rock thing. But I'd rather be in a pit with ultra conservatives than sitting on my couch watching the Bush Administration identifying itself with Kid Rock and his sexually explicit lyrics.

Should it be surprising that the tsunami is being used by radical Muslims as propaganda against Christianity and Christmas? Or to further the hatred toward the Jews?

The story reported: Saudi cleric 'Aed Al-Qarni told the worshippers, "Throats must be slit and skulls must be shattered. This is the path to victory." He was reacting to the death of a brother "killed by the brothers of apes and pigs, the murderers of the prophets." In case there was any doubt, he was referring to the Jews of Israel.

We are living in radical times. Christians in America need to be alert to the reality of hatred toward Jesus as Lord and Savior. We are too apathetic and comfortable in our safe neighborhood churches. We live life a bit selfishly, and we usually fail to grasp the big picture of what’s happening in the world outside our borders.

Let this be a reminder that a spiritual war is raging, and we must not be draft dodgers.

Be alert. Pray often. Seek His face. Stand strong.

Big stars help raise big bucks

It looks as though we will be getting another telethon raising money for those hurt by the tsunami. The 911 moneymaker was a huge success, and this one will probably raise millions of dollars as well.

And the big-name entertainers are coming out of the woodwork to get involved.

But there is something inside of me that always remains skeptical when I hear about movie stars and major entertainers giving their money away.

I’ve been called the king of skepticism. So take these thoughts with that in mind.

But here’s a few questions I’d like to know:

Do entertainers usually just give to charities that promote their image?
Are entertainers simply instructed by a finance guru and their agents on who to give to?
Do entertainers give a calculated amount every year according to tax relief strategy?
If they give millions to the tsunami tragedy, is that over and beyond what they normally give, or will other charities not receive their funds because Peter was robbed to pay Paul?

I know, it’s really none of my business. But then again, when the media gloats of their giving, I’d like to know the complete picture.

My policy on giving to charity is simple: give from the heart.

We got an inheritance!!!

My wife’s grandfather passed away last week. Ivan Frownfelter, 89, was laid to rest on Christmas Eve morning as the ground was covered with six inches of fresh fallen snow in Flint, Mich.

Funerals and Christmas don’t mix together too well. But gifts and Christmas do. And since both grandparents are now gone to be with Jesus, so the time has come to deal with the estate and the inheritance.

Ivan and Maxine Frownfelter lived simple lives. They had lived through the depression years, the wars, and several presidents. They, like many others who lived through the depression, saved their plastic grocery bags, bread ties and newspaper rubber bands. They had many glass figurines, some old dusty books, and boxes of priceless pictures.

But when it comes to major estate inheritance, their lives proved not to focus on materialism, but did emphasize on simple, good Godly living. And when it comes to inheriting something from your family—that’s priceless.

Here’s what my family inherited from the grandparents:

Hugs and Smiles. There was never a time we weren’t greeted with a hearty hug and a genuine smile of love and care. Showing affection for your loved ones is almost a lost art in some of today’s families. But we have learned the importance and power of loving gestures that warms the heart. We can pass this on to our children, nieces, nephews and younger cousins. Showing affection is worth its effort.

Newspaper clippings. Her grandparents occasionally would send us a letter in the mail with an added clipping from a newspaper article giving advice in some area of life. The advice may not have been rocket science, but the clipping was evidence that they were constantly thinking of family--even when reading the paper. Their thoughts were constantly targeted on the family. A newspaper clipping about healthy remedies for a headache was nice, but the thought behind it is invaluable.

The spot light. When we visited the grandparents and attended church with them, we were introduced to everyone as if we were million-dollar movie stars. They were so proud of their grandchildren. Not for any achievements or merit, but because they simply loved us and wanted to show us off to their church friends. Grandparents who pour their love into their family build self esteem, self respect, and a sense of dignity. Their outward appreciation and admiration for us has made us a better people.

A prayer covering. My wife’s grandparents prayed for us everyday. We were a regular part of their daily prayer lives with God. They would pray for our protection, for blessing, for our son, and for our ministry in Mattoon. They invested in our lives through prayer. Praying for your family is priceless. Do you want to pass along something significant to your loved ones? Then pray everyday for them that God would work in their lives in tremendous ways.

Memories. We have so many wonderful memories of holidays, vacations, and special occasions with the grandparents. These memories, many captured on film, won’t rust, wither, or be eaten by moths. These memories are masterpieces in our memory banks. These memories are far more important than any materialistic object could ever become. Are you making precious memories with your family? Making positive memories builds a heritage that will continue to be passed on through the generations.

When we think of an inheritance, we often think of property, wealth, jewelry, or antiques. Our minds naturally think of the materialistic side of inheritances. But let’s take time while we’re all living to deposit quality characteristics into our loved ones. Teach them good morals, first-class character, and a strong faith in Jesus Christ. Make positive memories with your family. Pray for them everyday.

Leaving behind a nice lot of land is one thing. Leaving behind a Godly legacy is another.

Grandma Maxine and Grandpa Ivan, thanks for the wonderful inheritance. We’ll be sure to pass it on.

The stamp---small, just takes up a tiny corner of you envelope, but soon will cost 41 cents. It seems the US postal service needs more cash, and will be raising the cost of stamps in 2005. see story here

It's hard to imagine that it will cost four dollars in postage to mail 10 letters. Writing letters to friends the old snail mail way will be a forgotten means of communication. Paying bills online will be more common than not.

Communication continues to change forms. And this time, the US Postal Service will be pushing it forward.

I'm going to the woods with a gun...

Thanksgiving is around the corner, deer hunting season has arrived, and bullets are flying in Wisconsin.

According to the AP News: Police in Wisconsin say a man accused of shooting eight hunters was "chasing after them and killing them."

Authorities say the deadly violence in Sawyer County erupted after a dispute over a tree stand on Sunday. They say two hunters who confronted Chai Vang were shot as were those who responded to calls for help.

Five people were killed and three were wounded. Police say the suspect was "sniping" at the victims with an assault-style rifle. The suspect was arrested after getting lost in the woods and running out of bullets.

I'm sure the anti-gun people will be up in arms using this scenerio as a foothold in their soapbox against firearms. But this is not a hunting issue. This is not a gun issue. This is a crazy man issue.

Don't let the spin hit you as you hear about the dangers of guns during hunting season. This man was illegally on private property. When he was approached by the owners, he began shooting like a mad man. As help was called to the scene, he shot those guys too. This is no typical hunting accident.

This man has severe issues. I hope anti-gun activists are smart enough not to use him as a poster child. We'll see.

By the way, my father-in-law is taking me hunting Thanksgiving morning. I hope we find lots of pheasent... and no wackos.

Ok, Truth B Told readers.....I'm leaving for Poland on Friday. I won't be posting on this site for a week, because I'm trying to reserve it for opinion on news, culture, politics, faith and stuff like that.

However, I just started a new site that will track my travel.

In the mean time...my soon to be trip to Poland has got me thinking about Communism and Democracy. It will be interesting to land in a post-communist nation and see what's happening.

Democracy, as great as it is, probably brings new problems to the area. We'll see.

Maybe some day we'll have this same discussion about Iraq???

According to the New York Times: Paramounts Alfie, a remake of a romantic comedy about a roguish womanizer starring Jude Law, opened to a dismal $6.5 million in more than 2,000 theaters, far below expectations.

Wayne Llewellyn, the president of distribution at Paramount, said that the conservative ethos reflected in last weeks election results might have hurt the film.

"It could be the mood of the country right now," he said. "It seems to be the result of the election. Maybe they didnt want to see a guy that slept around."

Do you think people not wanting to spend $7.00 to watch care-free sex hopping at the theater is a mood of the country? Way to blame a poor film on the president. How about blaming Paramount for not knowing the MOVEMENT of the country.

I believe we are in a slow uphill climb on morality mountain--in the majority of the United States. Conservative family values is not a political issue. Being family friendly is a lifestyle issue. To some, its a spiritual issue.

Take God completely out of the picture...what decent mom wants to raise a kid who would enjoy watching a guy take complete advantage of women and live a careless life that revolves around sexual encounters with as many women as possible.

Decency in the theater--although rare--is appreciated among families.
I doubt if Hollywood will ever hear this.

2004 election WINNERS & LOSERS

While we all know which candidates won the 2004 election, I have a few other winners and losers that need to be noted:

Illinois Republican Party – LOSER
The Republican Party in Illinois is in serious trouble. The slate needs wiped clean and an entire new program needs to be built. Judy Baar Topinka needs to step aside and let someone else come in and rescue this sinking Titanic.

Talk Radio-WINNER
Talk radio stepped up to the plate and hit big homeruns this election season. The voice of the mostly conservative radio hosts was heard. This is becoming a more powerful voice in politics. Talk Radio is offering a different perspective than the mainstream media. It’s a force to be reckoned with.

Youth Vote-LOSER
Why can't we get more than 20 percent of the 18-30 bracket out to vote. MTV, Vote or Die, P Diddy, The Boss, Bon Jovi....sorry guys; they may like your music, but it doesn't take them to the polls. Most young adults fail to voice their choice. Don't complain in the next four years...

Bloggers-WINNER
They may not be 100 percent trustworthy, but their winners in ’04 because of its amazing growth in the political process, New voices are being heard in an uncensored environment that isn’t controlled by advertising or industry politics.

CNN-LOSER
I can’t believe CNN made such a big deal about calling Ohio a “green state” and refused to make a call toward Bush. They hide behind accuracy, but I believe it’s a smoke screen for its connection to the Democratic Party. They couldn’t deal with the truth…tried to keep Kerry alive as long as they could. In the end, they appear weak and closely connected to the democrats.

Traditional Values-WINNER
America’s sweeping vote for Bush shows an enormous geographical mass of people who care about family values and conservative morals. It’s encouraging to see a stance for conservative values. Their votes were heard loud and clear.

Exit Polls-LOSER
Egg on face for all these pollsters that think they have the inside info on elections. I’d love to see their faces and hear their conversations when Florida was called for Bush. I wonder who has to explain to Kerry why at 5 p.m. Tuesday his people were dancing in the streets, and then by 11 p.m. their was stilled silence.

Hollywood-LOSER
You are good actors. You are not political scientists. Your voice is a whisper in the political world. In 2008 just shut up and do your job...make us laugh and cry on the silver screen.

Democracy-WINNER
America showed the world that more than 100 million people can vote, and less than 24 hours later can have an outcome. No violence. No major corruption. No legal crud. People’s voices were heard. Let the model of democracy be heard around the world.

Bin Laden would vote for Kerry

According to an online news report:
Osama bin Laden warned in his October Surprise video that he will be closely monitoring the state-by-state election returns in tomorrow's presidential race -- and will spare any state that votes against President Bush from being attacked, according to a new analysis of his statement. (full story)

The message in his recent video statement was that any U.S. state that votes to elect Bush on Tuesday will be considered an "enemy" and any state that votes for Kerry has "chosen to make peace with us."

If our enemy, the man who organized the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Towers and Pentagon, is glad to have Kerry in the Oval Office, isn't that a message we need to take to heart. Does Osama Bin Laden think America will be less of a threat if Kerry is in the White House?

Osama bin Laden (and France) has declared favor for John Kerry. Why? Because George W. Bush has proven to stand against terror, and not be afraid to fight for what is right. However, Kerry has sent mixed messages about how involved America should be in these conflicts.

We need to pay close attention to the fact that Bin Laden would love to have Kerry as President of the United States.

It seems Bin Laden would vote for Kerry. Who are you voting for?

ABCNEWS: to air or not to air...

According to the DRUDGE REPORT:

ABCNEWS obtained a "terror threat" tape from a source in Waziristan, Pakistan over the weekend. The network has withheld airing it, initially citing concerns over its authenticity.

One senior federal official alleged ABCNEWS is now holding back from broadcasting any portion of the video out of fear it will be seen as a political move by the network during election week.

One ABC source, who demanded anonymity, said Thursday morning, the network was struggling to find a correct journalistic "balance.""

This is not something you just throw out there while people are voting," the ABC source explained. A second ABC source told DRUDGE: "We continue to report this story aggressively."

We have to ask these questions: Has ABCNEWS already stirred the political pot by admitting they haven't released the video because it may be seen as a political move? Are their political motives behind ABCNEWS, and that's why their integrity checks and balance siren went off? If ABCNEWS was confident of its objective news reporting, wouldn't this be an easier decision?

If this is a genuine find in Afghanistan, and it was really obtained this week, then I say let the video air. It's not election eve--like CBS had plans to air the missing stockpile story.

And since the CIA and FBI late Wednesday authenticated the video, ABCNEWS has the protection that this video is not a hoax.

The real question is: does this new threat help President Bush or Senator Kerry in the upcoming election?

I would suggest it undoubtedly helps Bush, because he has stronger polls in the area of foreign policy, war on terrorism, and homeland security. This video could be replayed in the minds of all voters as they step into the voting booth next Tuesday.

Is the video news worthy? That's the question ABCNEWS is asking themselves. However, critiquing the news agencies that cover of the news is becoming more newsworthy than the news itself.

Somtimes truth is blurry--especially when proclaimed from an anchor desk.

I have an average size, non-flip, cell phone that allows me to call my friends. It doesn't take pictures. There's no pretty color screen. No games. No calculator to figure out...(what do people use their phone calculator for?) And it comes with about 8 options for ringtones.

I can't download new ringtones in my phone. I can't set different songs to different caller numbers. I just hear a basic little ring that let's me know someone wants to talk to me. It's simple. It's boring. But it works.

Some people would be miserable to be in my shoes. They need the smallest, coolest, techiest phone available (I'm not talking about my in-laws who still have a 4-pound bag phone in their car.) Some people always have the best gadgets, and trendiest electronic stuff. There's a lot of people out there. And now the commercial market is grabbing the bull by it's musical horns and running with it.

According to Reuters:

The new chart, known as the Billboard Hot Ringtones Chart, will reflect the "Top 20" polyphonic ringtone sales for each week, including song title, artist, previous week's position and number of weeks on the chart.

Polyphonic tones are the dominant force in the ringtone market and are created using electronic synthesizers.

The ringtone market has exploded in recent years, with global revenues estimated to have topped $3.5 billion in 2003, according to industry estimates.

That's a lot of money to spend on ringtones. But I am beginning to understand how ringtones help shape a person's identity and image.

Like a rad pair of leg warmers or a stone-washed jean jacket, ringtones help make a person who they are in our plastic little world.

GHOST TOWN, Fla. -- GOP campaign officials along with Kerry's bus pulled into Wal-Mart early Friday morning to pick out costumes for Halloween.

Bush representatives were browsing through the lab coats trying to find a perfect fit for a moderate stem-cell researcher outfit. Others observed Bush's people looking through urban hip-hop collections and large gold chains. Whispers suggested he would like to appeal to a missing black community vote that he would love turn out to the polls in his favor on election day.

Lady Bush's representatives were in the briefcase section, thinking a business look could appeal to corporate ladies. However, rumors are that she will be wearing a Rainbow Push t-shirt accented with a pink gay-pride ball cap.

In a move to seem young and hip, Cheney's people were seen buying a large white sheet to be made into a toga. "He wanted a wild fraternity-boy look," a close source revealed. "He did think about being a trial lawyer for Halloween, but he didn't want to scare the kids."

On the other side of the store, Kerry's assistants were in the hunting section buying a lot of orange stocking caps and camo vests for all the door-to-door volunteers in the Midwest. Kerry, himself, was in the fitting room trying on a Superman outfit. His advisers claim the late Mr. Reeve's final request was that Kerry help the Superman legacy live on.

On a side note, a right-wing activist was arrested after secretly placing an Adam's Family "Lurch" outfit in the cart.

Teresa Heinz Kerry browsed a few moments in the costume section, but then wandered in the beer and wine section to buy a few essentials for the campaign bus. She told reporters that she was getting a custom-made ketchup bottle costume for the upcoming holiday.

And for James Carville, he was simply buying a wig.

I e-mailed state representative Craig Fitzhugh who was accused of being responsible for distributing the "Special Olympic Bush" flyer. (see my Oct. 13 post) I wanted his comment.

Here it is:

Thank you for your email. I have stated in several articles, "It is
totally, unequivocally, completely a lie. I am completely disgusted by the accusation, by the distribution, by everything about it."

And he attached a few newspaper articles regarding the flyer investigation. It turns out to be political poopoo on the part of some dumb activist group.

Oh, the game of politics....
Sorry Mr. Fitzhugh for questioning you as a political idiot...

Does Right-winged Pat Robertson have a hidden agenda?

Has the October surprise been dished out by the hands of Pat Robertson?

Robertson, an ardent Bush supporter, told CNN in an interview Tuesday night that he urged the president to prepare the American people for the prospect of casualties before launching the war in March 2003.

Robertson said Bush told him, " 'Oh, no, we're not going to have any casualties.' "

Do you think Bush really said this? Why would he have sent our military in with chemical warfare protection, initiated the conflict with shock and awe, and asked the American people on the eve of war to pray for the safety of our troops if he didn't think their would be a chance of casualties.

Pat Robinson has a hidden agenda. And he's name dropping the Lord to see it come to fruition.

"I mean, the Lord told me it was going to be A, a disaster, and B, messy," Robertson said. "I warned him about casualties."

Did God specifically tell him this, or is this a normal gut feeling that everyone had knowing the history of Saddam Hussein's barbaric ways of warfare and killing innocent people?

I believe time will tell why Pat Robertson got on CNN a few weeks before the election and dropped this choice-cut steak in the mouths of the media while sitting at the table of public debate.

I'm smelling a new book coming out and he needs some easy press.

No matter what the case, he was totally out of line as a "Christian leader" to air these statements on national television.

Do I think it's wrong because it may hurt Bush? Not really. I have other reasons...

I believe Pat Robertson is playing the biggest game of "I told you so" that we've ever seen. If he truly feels this way about the President of the United States, and truly heard the president make those comments, and truly heard the clear voice of God on this matter...then he should privately discuss the matter with Bush, and leave it be.

Out of respect and loyalty to a friend, as well as his authority, Robertson should never have made this a public matter. It was disrespectful, dishonoring, and disloyal--characteristics no Christian should have toward leadership.

I believe Pat Robertson, as founder of the Christian Coalition, should lead by example in the area of respecting leadership, and dealing with matters in an honorable way.

There is no doubt that if this conversation that occurred in 2003 is still eating at Robertson's spirit, then he should act upon in in a private manner. Throwing it into the public domain weeks before the election is clear evidence that Robertson needed a little national attention.

There has to be a reason he appeared on CNN and made these comments....time will tell.

Book deal....that's my call.

ABC news anchor Peter Jennings said the media will never be completely objective.

"I'm a little concerned about this notion everybody wants us to be objective," Jennings said. He said that everyone -- even journalists -- have points of view through which they filter their perception of the news. It could be race, gender or income. But, he said, reporters are ideally trained to be as objective as possible.
"And when we don't think we can be fully objective, to be fair," the anchorman said.

What is fair? What is the standard for fair, and who sets it?

Obviously this is great fodder for a journey for truth. Some recent "comments" suggest I haven't been fair in my search for truth. That I tend to post anti-liberal articles and such. As I read through the news items of the day, I do get interested in a variety of news topics. I post some that are funny, some thought provoking, some politically stirring, and some to be pondered in the spiritual side of life.

Can news be objective? Can absolute truth be found on the evening news? Is there concrete absolute truth? How much does perspective, cultural experience, education, and upbringing have to do with perspective of thought?

Through the presidential debates we've experience how facts, numbers and stats can be truthful, yet manage to tell two different stories. How can a box of puzzle pieces be formed into multiple pictures? Who decides what is accurate, trustworthy, right, and just?

Today I post a lot of questions....very few answers.

But I do thank Peter Jennings for bringing to surface the fact that absolute objective reporting is impossible. And for that, we must always read with caution and careful analysis.

It's up to us, our brains, our guts, and our faith to sort out truth, perspective, opinion, and fantasy.

Truth seeking isn't for the apathetic.

feed the needy, hairy politics, laptop problems

My church volunteers once a month to help pre-sort food at the local food pantry. It's a non-profit, government funded food distribution center in our community. Although the government provides some funds for the program, the center is largely dependant upon volunteers. Several churches volunteer time, money and people power to accomplish a major task--help feed the needy in our town.

I'm very proud of our churches for bringing in troops to help with the cause. Some people stereotype evangelicals as people who are not concerned for the needy. I beg to differ. Although we may not stand on a soap box shouting the cause, we do quietly stand in the trenches and do our job. Sure, more people are needed and many do nothing. But last night I watched 16 people work hard to make sure people get food this week. From elementary students to retired seniors, people gave up an evening to work at the food center.

Sixteen evangelical volunteers in a town of 20,000 may not be conquering the global hunger problem, but we are doing our part. And for that...I say job well done. Obviously not finished, but for last night...well done.

Some Americans cheered when 9-11 happened?

Read the following paragraphs taken from a story by Knight Ridder Newspapers...

The hip-hop anarchist (KRS-One) has declared his solidarity with al-Qaida by asserting that he and other African-Americans "cheered when 9-11 happened," reports the New York Daily News. The rapper, real name Kris Parker, defiled the memory of those who died in the terrorist attacks as he spouted off at a recent New Yorker Festival panel discussion.

"I say that proudly," the rapper went on, insisting that, before the attack, security guards kept Blacks out of the World Trade Center "because of the way we talk and dress."So when the planes hit the building, we were like, 'Mmmm - justice.' "

The atrocity of 9-11 "doesn't affect us the hip-hop community," he said. "9-11 happened to them, not us," he added, explaining that by "them" he meant "the rich ... those who are oppressing us. RCA or BMG, Universal, the radio stations."

Some people live in a bubble. Maybe you would say I live in a bubble. But I would hope to have a more balanced perspective on the September 11 tragedy than this guy. This isn't a race issue. This guy could be brown, white, black, red, or blue. It's not the color of the skin that should be focused on. It's the level of self-centered, victim-mentality, anger that he possesses. This is a severe case of selfishness. It's a severe case of other things too...but I'm no therapist.

Terrorism has affected all Americans in some aspect of life. I wish this guy would take a few moments and look at the big-picture of life before he makes the mistake of mocking other horrific tragedies that affect our nation....our neighborhoods...and our world.

Presidential Faith: personal or political?

John Kerry, last night, had the opportunity to respond to Bush's comments on how his faith is a part of his position as president. (Bush clearly shared how his faith is personal, and that it will be a part of everything he does since it's such an important part of his life.)

Kerry--looking a little hesitant--told Americans he respects the president's faith, and even shares it. But then went on to give kudos to all the faiths of the world. Ahh, such political savvy for a guy looking for votes and watching the polls.

Here's his quote: "Everything is a gift from the Almighty. And as I measure the words of the Bible -- and we all do; different people measure different things -- the Koran, the Torah, or, you know, Native Americans who gave me a blessing the other day had their own special sense of connectedness to a higher being. And people all find their ways to express it."

Then Kerry went on to say we should love our neighbor, but the Bush administration hasn't done a good job at that.

Here's my point that needs to be highlighted. Bush talked about his faith in a personal way. You can tell he talks to God in a personal way and that it's a staple ingredient of his life. Kerry, on the other hand, threw out some religious terms that would make everyone happy, but then bashed President Bush as he quoted scripture about loving thy neighbor.

Now, I obviously have no sure-fire way or knowing the inner heart of each man. But by their statements, their practices, and my observations...I would dare to say Bush's faith is personal, and that Kerry's seems to be a little more political.

Those are my thoughts.....go ahead and pull out your guns and shoot at 'em.

According to traditionalvalues.org...Tennessee Democrats in a race for a state House seat in District 82, are circulating a flyer that shows a retarded child with President Bush’s face running in a track race. The headline says: “Voting for Bush Is Like Running In The Special Olympics: Even If You Win, You’re Still Retarded.”

I hope this is wrong. I hope this is bad information.
Please tell me Democrat Craig Fitzhugh is not doing this, and this turns out to be a hoax.

My business shouldn't mix with ad business

The last time I was at the Shoji Tabuchi Show in Branson was to see the men's bathroom, not the show. In fact, I've never seen the show... but I've been to the theater twice to experience the restrooms. The men's restroom has a pool table with a guy ready to rack the table for you. The stalls have solid wood doors with black marble toilets. But the best thing ever...there is shaved ice in urinals. Why? I have a few opinions, but I'll keep them to myself in this writing.

Why am I reminiscing about the ice-filled urinals in Branson? Because today I read that urinals are the new billboards of the day.

Where will this stop? I hope I never sit down in a public restroom to poop and the toilet tells me about a new South Beach diet book that's available at the local bookstore.

Almost every young boy's favorite superhero in the 70s, 80s, and 90s was Superman. Now the man who played this awesome caped crusader is dead. As sad as this is, it's a humbling reminder that we all have an eternal destination waiting for us. Kryptonite isn't the problem we must face, but a life without a relationship with our Maker.

Before we get too wrapped up in TV, politics, stem cell research, entertainment, and the MLB playoffs, let's take a little time to evaluate our real life, and where we'll be after we pass from this life on earth to our next destination.

Life will continue for all of us. But the destination of life is upto you. Jesus says that He is the way, the Truth, and the Life. Consider Him today.

Spinning Stupid
On a much less serious note....
I was watching the debates Friday and finally got sick of the spin. Both Republicans and Democrats have such obnoxious representatives to shout victory or point fingers at the end of each debate. Why do news programs air this stuff? Because people eat it up.

Can people think for themselves? Does the amount of spin on the TV after the debate suggest Americans are stupid and can't process the debate information without all the biased comment? I'm worried people wait to hear all the commentaries before they decide how the cadidates performed. Maybe we should all watch C-SPAN instead.

Man's journey for achievement is interesting. Some people want to build huge structures to show off their power and influence. Others are jealous. Some are so irate their willing to destroy the monuments of accomplishment.

Although the future of tall buildings seemed uncertain after Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States destroyed the World Trade Center towers in New York, fear didn't stand in the way of global pride in having the biggest building.

Ever sit and think about the things we get proud of. People are proud of their nice cars, their golf scores, their green lawns, their position at work, and even their cosmetically enhanced body features.

Between striving for success and harboring pride, we have to question ourselves as a culture to what truly is important, healthy, and beneficial to our lives. Building the tallest office complex offers what to humanity? Instead of reaching to the stars in fame, notoriety, and global recognition for constructing a building, maybe we should find reward in helping others, bettering our society, and pleasing our creator.

Several thousand years ago a group of people in the plain of Shinar wanted to build a tall building so they could have a name for themselves. To squelch their path to unstoppable pride, God scattered the people and put a stop to their rebellious behavior.

Is building a big structure wrong? No. What about working on a project or dedicating a lot of time to something that feeds your ego, but offers little to your world?

Reaching for the stars for fame, popularity, and power is such a dangerous journey. Many people fall along the way. Reaching toward heaven, on the other hand, and partnering with the Creator of the world to help humanity is a act that may go unnoticed in the newspaper, but is being recorded in an eternal media file that will be read in the heavenlies.

Guard your heart from pride.

A dad gets a kix to the pants

I was feeding my 17-month-old son breakfast this morning. As a post-egg snack, I gave him some Kix. On the box it provides its marketing logo: mother tested, kid approved." I wondered, What about dads?

Then I ate some of them.

The cereal reminds me of miniature cheese puffs without any cheese flavoring. In other words, small Styrofoam pellets. It's a good thing God created moms with the internal makeup they have. Because dads would pick Fruitloops any day over a bowl of Kix.

I guess us dads are just kids trapped in bigger bodies.

God knew what he was doing when he created man and woman. The differences between the two are a perfect balance in life.

As the AP story says: "All he wanted were the facts. But Dick Cheney ended up generating confusion_ and lots of it." We must look at the small details in determining truth. In our VP's situation, the difference between "com" and "org" is like driving to a quiet local library verses driving into fire-storm barrage of bullets aimed at your head.

The situation, as you've probably heard and read, came about Tuesday night the the midst of the nasty VP debate. In a discussion (burning accusation) regarding Halliburton, Cheney and tax loopholes, Cheney in 30 seconds could not explain all the details, but invited the public to check their facts at a non-partisan webpage that does the fact checking for you.

Sounds like a logical idea. However, Mr. Cheney leads people to factcheck.com instead of factcheck.org.
The dot.com site is a billionaire funded anti-Bush site. The dot.org site provides facts.

Unfortunately for Bush supporters, the anti-Bush site was on fire with hits Tuesday night at the urging of his very own running mate. The small details do count.

When we are examining truth in all chapters of life, the small stuff counts.

My wife and I came across this man when we were on our honeymoon in 1997. He was standing at an "scenic overlook" in the Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg, TN. We was giving away cookbooks that had religious material added to it. I believe it was a mix of Buddhism and New Age philosophy, and some other stuff. When he found out I was a Christian, he immediately attempted to make connections. "My brother is Baptist." And, "The Bible is a good book." I imagine he confused people all day with spiritual talk. But I asked him a few direct questions that separated my beliefs from his. Although he would like to promote all "people of higher faith" as heaven-bound individuals, he refused to accept the Acts 4:12 truth that no other name besides Jesus can make way for an everlasting life with God.

The guy sounded spiritual. But when you examined the details, he was a buffet of religion standing in a state park.

Whether you're surfing political news or searching for real hope and truth, make sure you look at the details--it'll make a difference.

the journey begins

When I was in college (Eastern Illinois University) I worked on staff at The Daily Eastern News all four years. The motto of the paper was "To tell the truth and don't be afraid." What an exciting mission statement. No matter the cost, no matter the consequence...get the truth out.

I covered local news in Charleston, IL. City council meetings, county board, local biz updates....stuff like that. Then I moved up the chain to city editor and eventually found myself sitting in the editor-in-chief office. All the time, we passionately nosed around for truth, and was passionate about sharing it to our 9,000 plus readers on a daily basis.

My life has taken a turn in the area of career... but the mazing thing is that I still want to the tell the truth and not be afraid. That will be an ingredient in the this blog...my journey for truth, sharing truth with others, and discovering together how to apply truth to our lives.

Oh yeah...I am a Christian. Before stereotyping me, I follow Jesus, and that's what makes me a Christian. If you have preconceived opinions of Christians, please be fair enough to give me a shot at showing people that Christianity is real, and not as hokey or hypocritical as some have unfortunately painted the picture.

So..this is the begining of an online, transparent journey. Come along...comment along...
