the tallest building in the world

Comments:
"Are you trying to imply that the terrorist attacks are a result of jealousy?"

Nice question...and the answer is no. I think you've linked two examples into on. I said some people are jelous of the structures. The I said some are irate at them. The terrorists are irate at western icons for the exact reason you stated...it's symbolic threat to their culture.

So, the Sept. 11 reference was used because in the AP story (please read the story so you can discuss this in context)their was reference to the fear of building huge structures because of the recent terrorism. And I point out that pride has outweighed fear.

To quote from the story: "Before the title ceremony, Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian told Klemencic that the record "not only gives affirmation to Taiwan's architectural industry, it's also the pride and honor of Taiwan's 23 million people."

It's obvious that PRIDE is the issue here. And that Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian has said that clearly.

You said:"...I'm going to have to say you cross-cultural understanding is hardly something to be desired."

I understand that Islamic fundamentalist hate the west because of cultural influence.

I guess the question needs to be posed: Is it worth killing innocent people to maintain your culture in a world where unique traditional culture is being tossed in a meltingpot of globalization?

Honoring your culture is honorable. Killing innocent people isn't.

Besides, people in the Middle East who are slowly shifting into a western lifestyle are choosing it. And isn't it funny that many Islamic fundamentalists hate the west, but still take advantage of it's superior academic institutions.
